1)
S
hortcut
to restarting xp..

You can
restart a Windows XP Pro and Home machine easily by creating a shortcut with
following path. (Assume you installed Windows XP on your C: Partition) "
c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe
-r -f -t 00
" -r is for restarting the
computer. -f is to force close all programs without saving. -t 00 is used to
restart in zero seconds. i.e. as soon as you D.Click on the shortcut. You can
log off from a Windows XP Professional or Home edition by running "
C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe
-l -f -t 00
". Also you can shutdown a
Windows XP Home or Professional edition by running "
c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe
-s -f -t 00
". You always have to turn
from the CPU after running this command. (Same with AT and ATX powered
machines.) If you want to turn down power of ATX machine automatically, run "
c:\windows\system32\tsshutdn.exe
00 /POWERDOWN /DELAY:00
" This is used
to turn off a server. Even though your computer will be

shutdown completely, this whole operation will take 30 seconds to finish. Even
though you don't have networked computers attached to your computer, this works.

2)
Disabling Display of Drives in My Computer :

This is yet
another trick you can play on your geek friend. To disable the display of local
or networked drives when you click My Computer go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Now in the right pane create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives. Now modify
it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) Now press F5 to refresh. When you
click on My Computer, no drives will be shown. To enable display of drives in My
Computer, simply delete this DWORD item. It's .reg file is as follows: REGEDIT4
[
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
] "NoDrives"=dword:03ffffff

3
)
Pop a banner each time Windows Boots :

To pop a banner which can contain any message
you want to display just before a user is going to log on, go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon
Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and
enter the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar. Now create yet another new
string value and name it: LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you
want to display each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display
the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box. It's .reg
file would be: REGEDIT4 [
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"LegalNoticeCaption"="Caption here."

4)
Great trick Lock ur PC yourself

lock ur pc..
open notepad copy and paste the script below and save it .VBS extention

This wil create a shortcut.. run(click) it

set WshShell =
WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(wshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop") & "\LockWorkstation.lnk")

oShellLink.TargetPath = "%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe"

oShellLink.Arguments = "user32.dll,LockWorkStation"

oShellLink.Save

first select a folder for example i'll use a folder name movies in D drive
D:\movies\

in the same drive u create a text file and type

ren movies
movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

and save it as
loc.bat

again u type in a notepad as

ren
movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} movies

and save it as
key.bat

now in D drive u can see two batch files loc and key.. when u double click loc
the movie folder will change to control panel and whn u double click key the
control panel will change to normal folder..

there are two more different tricks in dis site to lock ur pc down in a unique
ways.. donno where i have typed it.. !!!

5) Deleting System
Options from the Start menu :

You can actually remove the Find and Run
options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like
always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it NoFind.(To
remove the RUN option name it NoRun). Double-click the newly create DWORD to
edit it's value and enter 1 as its value. This will disable the FIND option of
the Start Menu and will also disable the default Shortcut key(F3 for Find.) To
restore the Run or find command modify the value of the DWORD to 0 or simply
Delete the DWORD value.

6) Cleaning Recent Docs Menu and the RUN MRU :

The Recent Docs menu can be easily
disabled by editing the Registry. To do this go to the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Now in the right pane, create a new DWORD value by the name: NoRecentDocsMenu
and set it's value to 1. Restart Explorer to save the changes. You can also
clear the RUN MRU history. All the listings are stored in the key:

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMR
U
You can delete individual listings
or the entire listing. To delete History of Find listings go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc

Find Spec MRU and delete

7) Can u Delete Recycle Bin?

1 thing is 4 sure, delete option can be
added 2 recycle bin...

the old registry thing will work out.....

* launch d registry...

* open
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder

* to add a rename and delete option, change the Dword attribute to 70 01 00 20

* refresh and reboot the system..... u r done.

PS: always backup ur data as well as registry b4 attempting 2 work on it if u
r a newbie....

8) To change the icons used
for specific drives in explorer

Open
regedit by typing regedit into start->run

then navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer

now create a key(KEY not VALUE!!) called DriveIcons
under Explorer...

now within DriveIcons, create another key with the drive letter you want to
change (e.g.,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\K)...

create another key within the drive letter key called DefaultIcon...

now set the default String value equal to the icon you want to use. if you have
a file that has more than one icon in it, such as a DLL file, use the standard

C:\full_path\icon_file.dll,n <
file:///C:/full_path/icon_file.dll,n>)
where n is the number of the icon within the file icon_file.dll...

9)Change
drive icons.....

first of all copy a icon file to the root of the drive.

example:
c:\icon.ico

then create a file called: autorun.inf in c:\autorun.inf

then open that file and type the following:

[autorun]

icon=icon.ico

save and close the file.

now open my computer and resfresh.. and woh! icon changed....

you can apply to other drives too.

be carefull:

"autorun.inf" and "ico.ico" must be in the root of the drive.

example: c:\autorun.inf and c:\icon.ico.

same on the root.

ENJOY, this works on 98 too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10) Hacking windows SEND TO
MENU

I know this
is a very simple thing but the problem, as like many other issues, is the
ignorance about it.

How often do you copy songs from a CD? Or some photos from a CD?

What do you do? You select the required files and do a CTRL –C. Open the
destination folder and do a CTRL-V. Here is something you can benefit time from.
Customize your SEND TO MENU.

This sounds simple and you can do it in less than sixty seconds.

You can create your own BASKET.

First you’ll need access to hidden files. So change your view settings to make
all hidden files visible.

Tools -> folder options -> view (tab) and select the show hidden files and
folders.

go to
parent drive:/documents and
settings/(user name)/send to

Open up my computer and locate your most used folders.

Create a shortcut of the most used folders in SEND TO FOLDER.You can do this in
a number of ways.

Right click -> send to desktop(create
shortcut)
and move the shortcut from
the desktop to the SEND TO FOLDER

Copy the most used folder and go to SEND TO FOLDER and right click -> paste
shortcut.

Also remember to rename the shortcuts to send to videos or send to potos. We
don’t need confusion when we use the same later.

5. DONE

11) How to remove the shortcut
arrow from the desktop ?

Open Regedit and navigate to the following
key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \
Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Icons

Backup the key. More information.

In the right-pane, create a new String value named "29"

Double-click 29 and set its data to:

C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50
(an empty icon)

Close Registry Editor.

Now,

Right-click
Desktop,
choose
Properties

Click the
Appearance
Tab.

Click
Advanced
button.

Choose
Icon from the drop-down list

Set it's
size to 31
and press OK,
OK.

The changes will be applied now. Repeat the above steps and then set the Icon
size back to 32 (defaults). The above steps are required to force Windows to
redraw the icons

12) The Complete list ! Can u Do it!

Try to create a folder in Windows with either
of these names--

"con" or "nul" or "Aux" or "Lpt1".

Windows will not let u create ....

This s coz these refer 2 some well known ports....

-con corresponds to the console

-Lpt1 corresponds to printer and so on....

well dat was common but hw bt this ? Try these more

CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8,
COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.

13)TURN NUMLOCK ON AT
LOGON.!!

NumLock does not toggle on by default
(system-wide), even if you have it set in your PC's BIOS, because of XP's
multi-user functionality. Guess Microsoft doesn't know everyone actually turns
it on, which should be reason enough for what acts as "default"...

Anyway, you can hack the Windows Registry to change this behavior, or run a
script at logon to turn NumLock on.

1. To enable NumLock through the Registry:

* Open Windows' Registry Editor (START > RUN, type "
REGEDIT").

*. Navigate to
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control
Panel\Keyboard
.

*. Change the value for

InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

2. To enable NumLock using a script, see this MS Knowledgebase article for
complete instructions:

CODEhttp://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q262625

Option 1 is the quicker method, but if you have more than one user on your
system and one or more don't want NumLock on (stranger things have been known
of), then option 2 is the way to go since it allows you to only attach the
script to specific users.

14)
REMOVING
SERVICES DEPENDENCIES.!!

This will
allow you to disable a service or uninstall it from your system without
effecting another service that depends on it. Here's how you do it

1. After you have set your services the way you want them and you have
disabled/uninstalled something that another services depends on, run "
regedit"

2.
Under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\find the service that will not function, do
to another service being disabled/uninstall (found in

ControlSet001\Services,
ControlSet002\Services, and CurrentControlSet\Services
)

3. Once you have found the service right-click on the string value, "DependOnService,"and
modify

4.
You should now see a list of services that it is dependent on. Simply delete
the service that you have disabled/uninstalled

5. Restart your computer and your ready to go Disclaimer REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOU
REGISTRY FIRST I'm not totaly sure if this will have any negative effects on
your system. I used this method after uninstalling "Netbios over Tcpip" from my
system completely, so that my Dhcp service would function and I have had NO
negative effects on my system.

15)TURN

Windows XP Twenty Useful Tips and Tweaks

New Page 1

Windows XP

Twenty Useful Tips and Tweaks

1) Cracking Windows XP Login Password
download the nice and easy Nt/2k/xp password cracker from

our community
or other way is if u get acess to the
computer then go to Start>Run and type “control userpasswords2” without Quotes
and a new pop up windows will open and u will reach to user account properties.
Here u can Reset the Administrator and any Users password so anytime when u Want
to use the Computer start it in safemode pressing F8 at Booting get into the xp
as u have Administrator password and go to Controlpanel>Useraccounts and create
a New Account .Start Computer Normally and get into WinXP with ur newely made
account and do ur job. (Don’t forget to Delete ur newely made account Otherwise
u will be in trouble) Delete ur account again starting the computer in Safemode
as Administrator and Delete ur Account.

2) Disable XP Boot Logo
It is possible to disable the XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the
overall boot process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause
you not to see any boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ... ),
but if your system runs without any problems then it should not matter. Edit
boot.ini. Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect". Upon restarting, the
splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

3) Turn Off Indexing to Speed Up XP

Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard
disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside
to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down
normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of
searches on your hard drive then you may want to turn this feature off: Open My
Computer. Right-click your hard drive icon and select Properties. At the bottom
of the window you'll see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster
searches," uncheck this and click ok. A new window will pop up and select Apply
to all folders and subfolders. It will take a minute or two for the changes to
take affect but then you should enjoy slightly faster performance.

4) Clean Your Prefetch
to Improve Performance This is a unique technique for WinXP. We know that it is
necessary to scrub registry and TEMP files for Win9X/ME/2000 periodically.
Prefetch is a new and very useful technique in Windows XP. However, after using
XP some time, the prefetch directory can get full of junk and obsolete links in
the Prefetch catalog, which can slow down your computer noticeably. Open

C(system drive):/windows/prefetch,
delete those junk and obsolete files, reboot. It is recommended that you do this
every month.

5) Performance Increase Through My Computer
Easy enough tweak to usually find out about it on your own, but still, some of
us still don't find it right away. So here it is: Start > right-click on My
Computer and select Properties. Click on the "Advanced" tab. See the
"Performance" section? Click "Settings". Disable the following: Fade or slide
menus into view Fade or slide ToolTips into view Fade out menu items after
clicking Show Shadows under menus Slide open combo boxes Slide taskbar buttons
Use a background image for each folder type Use common tasks in folders There,
now Windows will still look nice and perform faster.

6) Reduce 10 Second Scandisk
Wait Time Start MS Dos Prompt (Start run CMD),
and type: CHKNTFS /T:4 where 4 is the amount of wait time. CHKNTFS /? for more
info.

7) DMA Mode
on IDE Devices Just like Windows 2000, Windows XP still fails to set the DMA
mode correctly for the IDE device designated as the slaves on the primary IDE
and secondary IDE channels. Most CD-ROMS are capable of supporting DMA mode, but
the default in XP is still PIO. Setting it to DMA won't make your CD-ROM faster,
but it will consume less CPU cycles. Here's how: Open the Device Manager. One
way to do that is to right-click on "My Computer", select the Hardware tab, and
select Device Manager. Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and double-click on

"Primary IDE Channel". Under the "Advanced Settings" tab, check the "Device 1"
setting. More than likely, your current transfer mode is set to PIO. Set it to
"DMA if available". Repeat the step for the "Secondary IDE Channel" if you have
devices attached to it. Reboot.

8) Load Internet Explorer the Fastest

Way Possible Edit your link to start Internet Explorer to have -nohome after it.
For Example: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome This will
load internet explorer very fast because it does not load a web page while it is
loading. If you want to go to your homepage after it is loaded, just click on
the home button.

9) Easy Way to Adjust Large SystemCache
Normally, the tweak I've seen asks you to go into HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management and change the value to either O or 1 to the
adjustment the LargeSystemCache. However, in Windows XP, all you have to do is:
Right-click My Computer. Select Properties. Click Advanced. Choose Performance.
Click Advanced again. Select either Programs or System Cache under Memory Usage.
Programs = 0 for the registry tweak equivalent System Cache = 1 for the registry
tweak equivalent

10) Shutdown XP Faster

Like previous versions of windows, it takes
long time to restart or shutdown windows XP when the "Exit Windows" sound is
enabled. To solve this problem you must disable this useless sound. Click Start
button. Go to settings > Control Panel > Sound, Speech and Audio devices >
Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds. Then under program events and windows menu
click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it. Now from sounds you can
select, choose "none" and then click Apply and OK. Now you should see some
improvements when shutting down your system.

11)Easily Disable Messenger
Go into: C:/Program Files/Messenger. Rename the
Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF". This does not slow down Outlook Express or
hinder system performance.

12) Turn Off Autoplay
for Program CDs How can you stop Windows XP from launching program CDs? Click
Start, click Run, type GPEDIT.MSC to open Group Policy in the Microsoft
Management Console. Double-click Computer Configuration, double-click
Administrative templates, double-click System, and then click Turn off autoplay.
The instructions on your screen describe how to configure this setting. Click
Properties to display the setting dialog. Click Enabled, and choose CD-ROM
drives, then click OK, to stop CD autoplay. This setting does not prevent
Autoplay for music CDs.

13) Synchronize Your Computer Clock with an
Internet Time
Server Does your computer
have the right time? If your computer is not part of a domain, you can
synchronize your computer clock with an Internet time server. To do so:
Double–click the time on your task bar. Click the Internet Time tab. Select the
time server you want to use and make sure to select the Automatically
synchronize with an Internet time server check box.

14) Win XP Won’t Completely Shutdown
Go to Control Panel, then go to Power Options. Click on the APM tab, then check
the "Enable Advanced Power Management support." Shut down your PC. It should now
successfully complete the Shut Down process.

15) Adjust Various Visual Effects
Open up the Control Panel. Go under System and
click on the Advanced tab. Click settings under Performance options. You can now
change various graphical effects (mainly animations and shadows).

16) Disable Error Reporting
Open Control Panel. Click on Performance and Maintenance. Click on System. Then
click on the Advanced tab. Click on the error-reporting button on the bottom of
the windows. Select Disable error reporting. Click OK. Click OK.

17) Increase Your Cable Modem or DSL Speed in
XP
This tweak is for broad band cable
connections on stand alone machines with WinXP professional version - might work
on Home version also. It may also work with networked machines as well. This
tweak assumes that you have let WinXP create a connection on install for your
cable modem/NIC combination and that your connection has tcp/ip - QoS - file and
print sharing - and client for Microsoft networks , only, installed. It also
assumes that WinXP will detect your NIC and has in-box drivers for it. If it
doesn't do not try this. In the "My Network Places" properties (right-click on
the desktop icon and choose properties), highlight the connection then at the
menu bar choose "Advanced" then "Advanced Settings". Uncheck the two boxes in
the lower half for the bindings for File and Printer sharing and Client for MS
networks. Click OK.

18) Stop Jerkey Graphics
If you are connected to a LAN and have problems with jerkey graphics, this might
be the solution: Right-click "MyComputer". Select "Manage". Click on "Device
Manager". Double-click on your NIC under "Network Adapters". In the new window,
select the "Advanced" tab. Select "Connection Type" and manually set the value
of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense" which is default.). You should reboot.

19) Speeding Up Your Old Shit Pentium by 50%
We all know that you really shouldn't try to run Windows XP on anything less
that about a Pentium 3 of some sort if you are out for speedy operations and
amazing reaction times, but for those of us with the good old Pentium 2's who
want to see just how well we can run XP, we have to tweak as much as we can
where-ever we can. A real killer to the system's performance is Windows Media
Player. Although it may look desirable and fancy with it's rounded off edges and
3rd-Dimensional appearance, the truth is, it takes up a large amount of that
precious processing power. All of these troubles however, lead to one thing in
particular with this 'new-look' over-rated music and video player...the
Visualizations. The look-great I'll admit but like a lot of software these days,
it has no purpose. If you run the task manager, and click the Performance tab
along the top, you'll see that when Windows Media Player is running and nothing
else is active, it takes up around 50% of the processors power. Once these
visualizations are turned off, it barely takes up 2-3% of the processors power,
which leaves much more room for other applications to work efficiently. Here's
how to disable the feature: Open Media Player. Make sure the Now Playing tab on
the left is selected. Click the View menu along the top. Go down to Now Playing
Tools

20) Turn Off System Restore to Save Space
By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume
Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you
don't want Windows to back up your system files: Open the Control Panel.
Double-click on System. Click the System Restore tab. Check "Turn off System
Restore on all drives". Hit Apply. You may now delete the System Volume
Information folder. ............................

Windows Password Loophole

Windows
Password Loophole

a. ok now, what you need to do is to run

compmgmt.msc

b. and click on local users and groups.

c. once you've gotten here you need to open up the 'users'
folder.

at this point i am walking along with you and notice that there are several

major security holes dealing specifically with the password:

1. double clicking on
the any user name allows you a list that looks

something like this:

"user name"

full name: -----------------------

|__________________|

description: -----------------------

|__________________|

--

|_| user must change password at next logon

--

|_| user cannot change password

--

|/| password never expires

--

|_| account is disabled

--

|_| account is locked out

"ok" "cancel" "apply"

ok if you can get past my cheesy drawing, i must ask, did you notice that

the "password never expires" box is checked? if you did, then you may have

realized that this means that you can also uncheck it!

2. if ure paying
attention, you'll see that the 'user must change password

at next logon' box is unchecked. if you put a check in this box of course,

when you shut down the system will prompt for a new password!

3. going back to step
c.,

right click on any account and notice the dialoge that appears:

set password...

all tasks

delete

rename

properties

help

i think you can handle it from here

ps. i wonder if you can access this data if this stuff is locked to the user

by the admin by going in through the command prompt. i doubt it but if neone

finds a way let me know.

2.
Lock Windows to protect computer

You can lock Windows to protect the computer when leaving the station easily by
creating a shortcut with the path rundll32.exeuser32.dll, LockWorkStation. The
Windows key + L is also a shortcut to this feature.

3. Edit sysoc.inf to list all software

To show all software that can be removed from your computer (including protected
Windows services), you can manually edit (using notepad for example) the
sysoc.inf file located in Windows\inf\. Just remove the word hide next to the
software pack.

*Note* - use this at your own risk. Removing critical components of the system
will make Windows instable.

4. Windows XP comes with IPv4 and IPv6

Windows XP comes both IPv4 and IPv6 support. To enable IPv6, you can install the
protocols needed with the command "ipv6 install" in the command-prompt. Then
type ipv6 /? to see the options. The installation will not remove the IPv4
protocols so your current configuration will still work.

5. Access Task Manager with shortcut

To access the Task Manager easier, you can make a shortcut that points to
%windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe.

6. Stop treating ZIP files like Folders

If you don't want your Windows XP to treat ZIP files like folders, you can
disable this component by running regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll at the command prompt
or Run dialog. If you start missing it, you can enable it by typing regsvr32
zipfldr.dll.

7. Run program as diffrent user

You can run a program as a different user. Right click an application and select
Run As command.

8. Switch users leaving applications opened

You can switch users leaving the applications opened too (*NOTE* use this only
when needed since it could lead to system instability).

Go to Task Manager - processes and end the process explorer.exe. This will end
only your session and not all applications. Then go to Applications tab, click
New task and type runas /user:domainname\username explorer.exe. A password
prompt will appear to login to the desired username. The user's session will
start, with all your previously applications running.

I recommend to open first a command-line prompt and type runas /? to see all the
options available.

9. Rename multiple files in Windows at once

Rename multiple files in Windows at once. Select them all, right click and
select Rename. Enter the desired name. They will be renamed using what you
specified, with a number in brackets to distinguish them.

10. Task kill feature in Windows

Windows has a task kill feature similar to Linux. Go to a command prompt and run
the command tasklist to see running processes with PID numbers. Then type tskill
<PID> to end the specific task. This forces an instant closing of the task.

11. Edit features with GPEDIT.MSC

You can edit many features by running gpedit.msc. You can add log on/log off
scripts here and many features.

12. Edit accounts in the command prompt

You can edit accounts by running "control userpasswords2" at the command prompt.

13. Use systeminfo.exe to see System Information

You can use the systeminfo.exe command in the command prompt to see System
Information, including all Windows updates and hotfixes.

14.
Disable system services for maximum performance

There are system services that you can disable to free up the system's load. To
access the interface that permits you to make changes to system's services, type
services.msc and the command prompt.

This is a list of services that are *usually* useless and can be safely
disabled.

Alerter

Application Layer Gateway Service,

Application Management

Automatic Updates

Background Intelligent Transfer

Clipbook

Distributed Link Tracking Client

Distributed Transaction Coordinater

Error Reporting Service

WMI Performance Adaptor

*NOTE*:
Make sure you
don't need them since some applications you're using could depend on them. If
you make any application to fail by disabling any of the services, go back and
enable it again.

15.
Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD

If your system failes to start due to an error related to missing HAL.DLL,
invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by
using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the
Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete
it. Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot.

System information

System up time only for xp professional
edition

It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous

versions of Windows were coy about how long they went

between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.

Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from

the All Programs start button option, and then type

'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of

useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep

these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a

file called info.txt you can look at later with

Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

Lock pc just by double clicking mouse

You can lock your XP workstation with
two clicks of

the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using

a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe

user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field.

Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just

double click on it and your computer will be locked.

And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do

the same.

SPEED UP UR ACROBAT READER (ALMOST
LIKE NOTEPAD)

Do u get irritated when acrobat reader
takes 5/10 seconds to load when you want to open a pdf document. There is a way
to speed up the loading.

1.

Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader

(C:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\.. whatever)

2.

Move all the files and folders from the "plugins" directory to the "Optional"
directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).

Also make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and
not allow you to move the files).

Now your acrobat reader will load very fast

and almost as good as notepad..

Remove Stored username and
Passwords !

Passwords from your system, try this:

Click Start, Run and type Control keymgr.dll

Remove the entries from the list.

The other ways to access this dialog are:

Type Control Userpasswords2 in RUN box, click Advanced, Manage Passwords

-or-

From Control Panel, select your User Account, click Manage your network
passwords

It Works

Remove the Username and picture from Windows XP New Start Menu

The User account picture can be removed
by turning off the Welcome Screen. Or, by switching to Windows Classic theme.
Follow the method described in this article if you want to remove the username
and picture from the Start Menu, without disabling the Welcome Screen and
Windows XP Theme.

For those who want to remove the user name and user account picture from Start
Menu, in order to have a blank blue panel at the top, try this:

Start Windows Explorer and go to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures

From that folder, rename the BMP file which corresponds to your user account.

( For example, if your username is Robert, rename Robert.bmp to old_Robert.bmp )

Next, rename the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures\Default Pictures

to something else, say...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures\No_Default Pictures

To remove the user name, follow these steps

Start regedit.exe and navigate to the this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \
Explorer

In the right-pane, set NoUserNameInStartMenu value-data to 1

Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.

You'll end up with a blue space at the top of the Start Menu.

To get back the username and the
picture, reverse the above procedure.

For the New Start Menu, Windows XP looks
for the <username>.bmp file in the folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures

If the file is not found, it takes a picture from the "Default Pictures"
sub-folder. By renaming the <username>.bmp and the "Default Pictures" folder,
you're giving no chance for Windows to fetch an image for the Start Menu

~ Cheers ~.

Did you know that the flight number of
the plane that had hit WTC ...on

9/11 was Q33N ....Open your Notepad in ur computer and type the flight

number i.e Q33N... Increase the Font Size to 72, Change the Font to

Wingdings. U will be amazed by the findings.

Log trick !! make ur Notepad a diary
!!

Sometimes we want to insert current data
and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person
like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a
trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and
close it.

Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it
will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start
entering your text after that.

WHY?

The reason this happens:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.

It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode
UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM),
which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is
encoded.

1.

You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding
format)

2.

You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As /
Encoding format)

This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not
supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

~ cheers ~

SPEED UP MENU DISPLAY.!!

When using the start menu the you will notice a
delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer
experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the
different tiers to appear instantly.

Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how
to get started.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.

Right on it and select Modify.

Change the value to 0.

Reboot your computer.

CLICKING * .AVI FILES ON EXPLORER
CAUSING 100% CPU USAGE.!!

Well windows seem to have a REALLY big
problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an
AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the
width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window).
Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded
AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file
trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably
cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage. To solve this problem all you have
to do is the following:

1.

Open up regedit

2.

Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

3.

Delete the "Default" value which should be
"{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

Voila! Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows
properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate
etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.

NOTE: Please use caution when using regedit. Improper usage may cause windows to
behave imcorrectly. Also, I cannot be held resposible. Backup your registry
first.

CD ROM STOPS AUTOPLAYING/AUTORUN.!!

service to "Automatic".

How to make your Desktop Icons
Transparent

Go to Control Panel > System, > Advanced

DISPLAY MESSAGE ON STARTUP.

Start regedit, if you are unfamiliar
with regedit please see our FAQ.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Modify the key legalnoticecaption with what you want to name the window.

Modify the key legalnoticetext with what you want the window to say. Restart
